A couple of injuries, many lists, Spanish wonders and food delights

LifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLifeLife

So as part of project-wedding-dress, I've challenged J and I to enter and attempt a 10k run before the end of the year. Gym membership was purchase and I was off to a flying (ok, maybe not flying, maybe more of a slow jog) start. I was up to 6k's on the treadmill (yes, I realise to those of you who are fit-bunnies, 6k's is probably just a warm up) and then... shin splint. Oh, and add to that some sort of shooting pain in my neck that slowly worked its way down to my shoulder and has been there niggling away for over two weeks now… Progress and training are officially on hold. But as much as I like to pretend to whinge and complain that my training is now all off track and my routine is gone, I have to admit that sleeping in past 6.25am, not bumping into people on the tube with my back pack and showering at home in the mornings is really quite nice.

Anyone got any tips for how to prevent getting shin splints? Oh and J, now that I've announced our 10k plan to the blogging world, we can't back out now.

Save the date cards. Flower bouquets. Wedding rings. Table settings. To have a veil or not to have a veil - these are all the questions I am now pondering in as we approach the six month mark. Scary, I cannot believe the time is flying by so quickly but at the same time, I simply cannot wait to become Mrs M and share the day with friends and family. But of course, for most of you that know me, I have to be organised. I hate thinking I've forgotten to do something so I have started writing lists. If you saw how many wedding related lists I had, you would think I was somewhat of a Bridezilla - I don't think I've been too unreasonable about anything... have I? One list for the budget, one for flowers, one for menu choices, one for music... oh it goes on and on. To quote the saying from the front of a card a very good friend of mine recently gave me, 'Nothing beats the satisfaction of crossing things off a list.' I think this quote defines me.

And one more thing relating to love that's got nothing to do with lists or weddings... my beautiful big sister L and her wonderful husband G had a baby boy - a leap year baby! I am now officially Auntie d and am thrilled to pieces. Each morning I get a photo of the little guy and it just makes my morning. I adore him (he’s my phone wallpaper – I think this worries B a little bit) and he's the most wonderful little chubby thing in the world. Congratulations L&G, I am absolutely thrilled for you both! xx

I can't wait! Six months
and two days. But who's
counting?

Do you reckon I can get B and the boys to
do a photo like this?!

THIS is what I want - a whole cupboard
of wedding folders - ahhh, bliss...

FINALLY! A trip worth blogging about! Our first overseas trip (not counting Aus) since October! We flew in to Barcelona, Spain on Friday night and after a smooth and easy trip in on the Metro (so clean, so efficient – London underground, you should take note) we headed out for drinks and tapas. B’s first beer in over two weeks (a detox that I personally did not take part in) turned into slightly more than one and to cut a long night short, we ended up catching the last train of the night home and finally made it into bed at 3am.

Saturday saw us take a walking tour (with an English speaking Spanish guide who spoke ridiculously fast and who looked like an older version of one of my housemates) exploring this wonderful city and soaking up the much needed sunshine. It was an amazing 19 degrees and I spent most of our tour trying to find the spots of sunshine to stand in when we stopped to admire the city sites. The buildings, the beach, the football, the people, the FOOD… all amazing.

That night we went off the usual tourist track and hung out with the locals where menus contained no pictures and we guessed our way through drinks and foods. Brilliant, I loved it! B likes to think that because one of my best friends is Argentinean, that I immediately know what people are saying to me when they speak in fluent Spanish. He looks at me with big wide eyes as if to say, “Come on, you know Spanish! What did she say?” My Spanish vocabulary consists of being able to count to ten (although I’m not 100% on how to say ‘7’) chicken, meat, water, hello and “two beers/wine/sangria please!” But we got by, ordered food not knowing what might come out and loved every second of it. I am also proud to admit that I am trying to be a much more adventurous eater than when I first left Australian shores. I will eat random un-known meats, taste weird fishy things and give everything a go once. The exception being brown chicken. And mussels. And oysters. Ok, I said I’m trying!

I can’t wait to plan another trip to Spain. But before we go back, V, I think we might need to start up those Spanish lessons again! And one final thing – every country that we visit, we buy a magnet in order to have a lasting momento and what I hope will be the most interesting looking, conversation starting fridge. I am ashamed to admit that I quite often judge a country by the quality and novelty of the magnets they have on offer (front runners in this department are currently Spain, Germany, Belgium and France). Barcelona’s magnet is a plate of paella, complete with tiny mussels, peas and prawns – brilliant!

Sagrada Familia - incredible

Look at that blue sky!!

Just an every day seat in Barcelona - complete with
beatifully painted tiles and a story to go with it.

Gaudi wonders

It was t-shirt weather!

So much deliciousness going on lately! I have been making a conscious effort to make my food look pretty (haven't quite got the talents of Donna Hay just yet but I'm working on it) and taste even better, knowing that I have to blog about it. My new work mates have decided that rather than buy food or treats for meetings and birthdays, they will just commission me to bake for them. So far there's been chocolate caramel filled vanilla cupcakes, carrot and hazelnut cakes, Anzac biscuits and baby ginger and lemon tarts.

On the restaurant scene, I sampled an amazing English brunch at Bumpkin. Ok, so it was really breakfast but considering I'd technically already had breakfast that morning, brunch makes me sound like less of a fatty-boom-bar. A few weeks ago, on our weekly date-night, I had an entree of Italian spinach and ricotta ravioli with a sauce so amazing, I could have gone on eating it forever. And to posh it all up a bit, a French meal in Notting Hill of duck with chorizo, garlic shallots and duck egg in a basket (basically like really, really rich French toast) which if I'm perfectly honest, was almost too 'French'. There was so much going on, so many flavours and they were all so rich and over powering that by the end, I just stopped enjoying it. Such a shame because the restaurant was lovely and the waiter was so French, I really felt like I was back in Paris.

In Barcelona we had tortilla, paella, churros and hot chocolate, pimento carne, jamon iberico (I think this could possibly be one of B’s most favourite things in the whole wide world) and loads of other tasty delights whose Spanish names I can’t pronounce or spell.

From brunch to Italian to French to Spanish to Jew-‘ish’ American diner style – I do get around. A recent night out with the girls saw us visit one of the upcoming, happening food places - Mishkins in Covent Garden. Where mac & cheese is on the menu, sandwiches are back in style, food is described as ‘soggy’ and this makes it cool. Just yum. I haven't taken any photos from this night because my photographer friend Helen took some incredible pics with her pro camera while the rest of us acted as the lighting in this ridiculously dark restaurant by shining our mobile phones over the food while she snapped away. That’s just how we roll in London.

Home baked tastiness - Carrot & hazelnut
cupcakes with cream cheese icing
Lots of different types of fish with olives and pimento.
Ordered because I recognised the word 'grilled' and 'pimento'.
Not at ALL what we expected but delicious all the same.

Paella - the one thing on the menu that
I could understand

This was a complete guess. Some type of fish
in some type of sauce with cockles and fried
potato. Mystery food turned out to be good!

The important things in life

Life
I was actually a little stumped on what to write for life this time around. I didn't want to go on about work. Or how sometimes, living in a share house is really fun but other times it makes me want to tear my hair out (if the dishwasher is full... put it ON... oh, don't get started on this, I could go on for hours).

So I suppose I just need to say that my life at the moment, is pretty sweet. I feel very lucky and sometimes quite selfish that my biggest concerns seem to be whether or not to have dessert at our wedding or if I should take my physio seriously when she told me I'm no longer allowed to wear my gorgeous, ridiculously high heels (they will feel so unloved...) Needless to say, I'm taking the time to sit back and appreciate that I am happy and so very, very lucky (and I don't need to post it on facebook just so all my friends can comment and 'like this').

It shows that life can sometimes just be lovely
Ettington - February 2012

Love
Apart from the obvious and most important things in my life (family, b, friends, shoes...) here are a few more... superficial things I am totally in love with right now.

My puppy-coat. Chosen by my big sister, bought by my Mumzie and Dad for Christmas. best. coat. ever. It feels like it's made of puppies and seeing as little dogs bark at me when I wear it, I'm beginning to wonder if it actually is (it's not, I promise).

I know, you just want to pat me, right?
Stratford-upon-Avon - February 2012
This one isn't so superficial and is probably the thing that I'm most exciting about right now. The thought of becoming an auntie for the very first time. L & G, I could not be happier or more excited for you. I cannot WAIT to meet my little Blob.

The first thing I plan on buying for Blob
when he/she arrives. Just waiting to
find out whether to buy pink ones
or blue ones - don't be too late Blob,
I've got money riding on this!
I have no idea if it's new or I'm just really behind the times but I have recently discovered Pintrest. Beautiful photos of all kinds of random things - it's giving me inspiration in the kitchen and for that somewhat important upcoming celebration in September. I love!

A Pintrest image discovery - GENIUS idea!
Travel
Having still not ventured out of the UK (I know, I’m sorry, it’s almost a little bit redundant having a ‘travel’ section of my blog at the moment) we visited the Shakespearian town of Stratford-upon-Avon. As with every place I visit, I got very carried away with everything Shakespeare and was suddenly wishing I knew the sonnets and lines from all his plays. ‘Romeo, Romeo. Where for art thou Romeo’ is about as far as it goes though. But that aside, we had a day of brilliant blue skies, fascinating history (I know, bet you never thought you’d hear me say THAT!) beautiful old buildings and quirky little shops.

We spent the night in a teensy little town called Ettington. Our hotel (B will accuse me of being a princess for saying this) looked much better in the brochure but it had a pool (damn... didn’t think I’d need to be in a bikini in WINTER) and a hot tub so things weren’t so bad. It was also a very ‘couple-y’ place. I didn’t see any groups, no children, nothing of the sort – only couples. So when B was steaming himself in the sauna and I jumped in the hot tub with two other couples, I got the feeling they felt sorry for me for being on my own. Yes J, I was... judged.

not the Hollywood actress, just so we're clear

Food
So, I think I’ve done pretty well. I have lasted an impressive 18 months without buying a single cookbook. Those of you who ever visited my tiny little Canberra house will know that my giant bookcase contained row after row of cookbooks and cooking magazine. I even asked my mum to continue my Donna Hay magazine subscription while I was overseas but eventually coming home to years and years of old magazine to flick through did seem a bit excessive. And so I finally gave in and asked B to buy me my FIRST cookbook to own over here. Much to his disappointment, I had asked for a vegetarian cookbook and I am currently trying to introduce two vegetarian meals into our weekly menu. So far I've been met with the same response for every meal, "It'd be better with meat. But it's ok." Whenever he says this, I take it as a success. If I ever get anything better than 'ok' I'll be sure to let you know.

Twenty-seven isn't so bad...

Life
Another year older. Normally, I'm ridiculously excited about my birthday and spend the weeks leading up to it telling anyone who'll listen that it's almost 'my day'. This year, there was something about the number 27 that had me slightly on edge. Add to that, the day itself was a miserable wet, windy London day and so I decided to take it as a bad sign. But all un-neccessary drama aside, I made the best of a 'bad' - I know, how much more dramatic can I get - situation. What's to complain about when you get two types of birthday cake, lunch with my work girls, margaritas with my big sister, presents (the BEST bit!) dinner at a gastro pub with B and lots of presents from friends and family all over the world. So far, 27 is working out pretty good.

Margaritas = happy birthday
Love
Back in December during out trip back home, B and I met our wedding photographer at the Kooroomba winery and lavendar farm. We had our engagement photoshoot while we were there and despite the threat of rain, Sheila got some amazing shots. She made us laugh and relax and we couldn't have been happier with the pictures she took. Well, I say 'we' but to this day, I'm not sure B has even looked at them. Doesn't matter, as long as the bride's happy, right? For those of you who haven't already been bombarded with emails from me showing off our photos (hey, getting B to pose for a photo like this is like pulling teeth) feel free to take a look at the wonderful Sheila's blog.

LOVE her work!

Travel
I love that for the past two years, we've been to so many countries, I've lost count and now that I finally have a blog, none of our travels have been to anywhere exciting. Australia was brilliant of course but to me, that's home and it's not really that exotic. And neither was this place.

Our travels recently took us to the sleepy little town of Burton-upon-Trent. We took this adventure to celebrate B's 27th birthday. The theme was to be something beer-related and so, Bentoberfest was born. It was orignally meant to occur in November 2011 but we just ran out of weekends before our trip back home. Yes, I know this means it should technically have been called 'Ben-vemberfest' but it just didn't quite have the same ring to it.

So to summarise a few things that happened during the first ever celebration of Bentoberfest:

  1. Freedom brewery - a brewery tour where you get a half pint during the tour is always going to be awesome. Fantastic staff, tasty beer (where tastings come in FULL pint sized glasses) - well worth a visit.
  2. The brewery museum was probably one of the most boring museums I've ever visited. And that's saying something cos I've been to a loooot of museums. I thought beer was awesome but somehow, they managed to make it boring.
  3. We picked up a pool table and dropped it (we thought quite gently but apparently not) because the white ball got stuck inside. Bar man was not impressed. He was even less impressed when he had to pretty much take the table apart to find the ball. Hey, we paid £1 for our game and we wanted to finish it.
  4. B had what he claimed to be, "The best ale I've ever tasted." This was on night one so clearly, the right thing to do was to return to The Coopers Arms on day two, just to try it on a more sober palette. The claim still stands.
  5. Shamefully, we ended up in a Wetherspoons. There's no equivalet back in Aus for those of you reading at home but just know they're NOT the classiest of places. You get a good one every so often. This was not one of them.
  6. The night ended ever so abruptly with Jägerbombs. Enough said.
Who knows, maybe this could be a yearly celebration? Anyone interested in taking part in Bentoberfest 2013?

Food
The simplest of food is often the best. On a chilly Saturday night, J, L, B and I visited Zucca in the latest 'now' district of eating in London, Bermondsey Street. We had to google a few items on the menu (anyone know what a 'widgeon' is?) and with a couple of educated guesses, we ended up with some wonderful food. Buffalo mozzarella with roasted chicory salad, Zucca fritti and freshly baked bread with olive oil that was so lovely, I swear you could drink the stuff. Roasted veal chop that melted in your mouth and lamb ragu with thick, fresh pasta... just having a moment right now, remembering how delicious it was. Nothing fancy, nothing over the top, just simple and so very, very good. Surprisingly good wine too (always wary sampling a cheapie from an otherwise wallet-shattering wine list) and an affagato for dessert topped off my ideal night that was all about food.
Unfortunately, not a photo of the food because while
the food was amazing, my photography skills were
most definitely not
A widgeon is a type of wild duck by the way.

Something to write home about

Since the beginning of the year, I have been inspired by so many people's blogs - from those with incredible photos, great stories, funny one-liners, to those that are... shall we say... not so great!

I love writing, sharing photos and stories but I am also very aware that some people may find my constant (not so much now) emails and photo after photo rather irritating so I have decided to take on a different approach and give people the option to read or not to read without me clogging up their inbox.

So this is my blog - LifeLoveTravelFood. All things me, all things to write home about.

Nice, France - October 2011
Sunshine and champagne on the 'beach' (it's not a beach if
it doesn't have sand in my view) life doesn't get any better

All about the goings-on in my world. Living in London does have a certain glamorous ring to it so I'll try and keep that dream alive and write about my current home town in the most positive of lights. Unless I'm talking about the weather, the tube or the lack of family - J&L excluded - and friends from home over here. Since I've not been so good at keeping everyone up to date with the ins and outs of life, this space might help keep you posted.

Engaged in New York, February 2011

Miss to Mrs. I do. The year of the wedding. 2012 is the year that I try to ensure my entire life doesn't revolve around one day. 'The coolest bride in the world' - as I like to say, but that's for another post. It's also the year I promised myself I wouldn't continuously post on facebook about my upcoming white wedding because a certain someone (who also happens to be a bridesmaid, whose name starts with B and she KNOWS who she is) made me feel ashamed and embarrassed by potentially being one of those 'lame' brides who harps on about stuff no one else really cares about. Like table settings. And invitation fonts. And ties that have to match dresses. Miss B, all wedding posts are hereby dedicated to you. You never said anything about lame wedding blog posts. Might be a bit embarrasing if she never actually read my blog though...

First spot of sunshine in what felt like forever
Portugal, February 2011
Living in the UK means we can take a day trips to Paris, spend a weekend in Switzerland and fit three countries into one long weekend. The countries we have visited (and re-visited) so far have been incredible and it's one of the most amazing things about living over here. I am ashamed to admit that to this day, I never book a single trip away, that's B's speciality because while he's booking our brilliant holidays, I like to think about...

Brisbane food markets, December 2011

My passion in life. I adore food. I love cooking, I love feeding people, I love everything about it. Cooking keeps me sane, it makes me feel happy and it makes other people happy. I think I spent most of today emailing J back and forth about food. What I made for dinner last night, what we ate on the weekend, what I'm having tonight, what I had for lunch. It got me through what was an otherwise very uneventful work day. I was once told by a friend, "Food is not for pleasure. It is for a purpose."

I could not disagree more.
